Though the Joker’s origin is never shown in the animated series, some of his past is seen in the feature film Batman: Mask of the Phantasm.

The Joker is shown before his accident In flashbacks, but is not referred to by name.

The name, Jack Napier, is established in the episode “Dreams in Darkness” as spoken by Dr. Bartholomew. It is also mentioned in “Joker’s Wild” where it is found written in a dossier.

It is stated in Batman: The Animated Series that the Joker used many aliases throughout his career. So his true identity is still unknown.

When the pre-Joker struck out on his own and formed a small gang , they broke into the ACE Chemical Plant. This marked the first time he encountered Batman.

During their fight, the pre-Joker fell off a catwalk and into a drainage vat of chemicals.

He was washed out into the bay and discovered the chemicals had changed his appearance.

The chemicals had bleached his skin white, dyed his hair green and dyed his suit purple. His lips had been stained red, leaving them in a permanent rictus smile.

This new, clown-like appearance drove him into eternal insanity. He reinvented himself as the Joker. He became Batman’s greatest enemy and Gotham City’s most dangerous criminal.
