Iron Man in Marvel Comics

Tony Stark, an adopted son of weapon manufacturer Howard Stark, uses cutting edge armour technology to become Iron Man.

Tony is a billionaire and a genius inventor who, at a young age, inherited his family’s company.

On a business visit in a foreign country, local terrorists kidnapped Stark as he was overseeing a manufacturing plant. The captors wanted Stark to build weapons for them, but he instead created a suit of armour that he used to escape.

Stark upgraded the armour as soon as he returned to America. He used his intellect and resources to develop Iron Man as a force of good to protect the world.

Tony kept his Iron Man identity secret and kept up his responsibilities of managing stark industries for the better part of his career. Stark became vital in founding The Avengers, a superhero team.

Apart from Stark’s addiction to alcohol, he has faced countless enemies, namely: Iron Monger, Mandarin, Justin Hammer, and the Titanium man.

Tony covered his secret identity by claiming that Iron Man worked as a nameless bodyguard. Eventually, Tony Stark revealed to the public the truth of his dual identity.

First Appearance of Iron Man

The first appearance of Iron Man was in Tales of Suspense #39, published in March 1963.

The original story was developed as a collaboration between Stan Lee, Larry Lieber, Don Heck, and artist Jack Kirby, who is also responsible for designing the character.

Lee wanted to create a character that would go against the current Marvel established hero persona. He wanted Stark to be a wealthy lady’s man who also had a secret that would torment him.

National defence and technological advancements were constant themes throughout the book series, but some issues developed into more of a vulnerable and complex character. One of the more famous Iron Man storylines, “Demon in a Bottle” portrayed his struggle with alcohol.

Iron Man’s Armour

Stark is the inventor of the powered armor suit he wears as Iron Man. It gives him to flight, superhuman abilities, and an arsenal of weapons.

Over the years, the suit’s weapon system has changed, but the Iron Man unit has maintained a repulser ray shot from the palm of his gauntlet.

The other weapons built include a Uni-beam projector located in the chest, a 360 degrees defensive energy shield, and a pulse bolt.

Other capabilities of the Iron Man armour include projecting 3-D hologram decoys, manipulation of magnetic fields, generating freeze beams and the emission of sonic blasts.

Tony Stark Skills

Apart from being an intelligent businessman, Tony Stark is a genius in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. Tony is also an expert in Mechanical and electrical engineering.

Tony Stark is a business guru who has commanded people’s attention and earned respect. This stems from the fact he has built several companies from nothing.

Known to be loyal to his employees, Tony Stark also upholds ethics, hence firing an employee who had an illegal transaction with Doctor Doom even though they brought profits.

Iron Man in the MCU

Stark was portrayed as a playboy, genius, and billionaire industrialist by Robert Downey Jr. throughout the MCU movies beginning with Iron Man in 2008.

Stark was a powerful man with exceptional technical knowledge and wealth. He enjoyed the playboy lifestyle for years following the demise of his parents until the Ten Rings kidnapped him as he was demonstrating the Jericho missiles in Afghanistan.

Stark made and used the armoured suit to escape from his captors when his life was on the line.

He developed more armour units which he used against terrorists, including Obadiah Stane, who turned against him. He revealed his identity to the public following his fight against Stane.

Stark agreed to serve as a consultant for S.H.I.E.L.D to help improve the agency’s technology. Here, Stark developed a relationship with Pepper Potts.

The Avengers Assemble

Iron Man worked alongside the Earth’s greatest superheros to protect the world against Loki and his powers gained from the Tesseract. Working along side Captain America, Thor, Hulk, Black Widow and Hawkeye, the heros defeat the threat.

As a result of the battle against Loki and Chitauri, who were threatening the world, Stark developed P.T.S.D.

To combat post-traumatic stress disorder, Stark created of the Iron Legion to protect the world as he sought retirement.

Avengers: Age of Ultron

Scarlet Witch’s visions influenced Stark alongside Bruce Banner to create a peacekeeping A. I called Ultron to safeguard the world.

But Ultron believed that the Universe was threatened by humanity and should be extinguished. Eventually, Ultron was defeated by the Avengers, but many civilian lives were lost.

Infinity War and Endgame

When Thanos and the Black Order invaded Earth in pursuit of the Infinity Stones, Stark worked with the Avengers to battle the Titan.

Stark fighting alongside Doctor Strange, Spider-Man and the Guardians of the Galaxy convened together to oppose Thanos’ forces.

Doctor Strange eventually gave up the Time Stone in exchange for preventing Thanos from taking Tony Stark’s life.

Stark and Nebula survived and managed to escape Titan using the Guardians of the Galaxy spaceship, the Benatar, but the ship was damaged and thus left stranded in space.

Captain Marvel came to their rescue and took them to Earth.

Thanos succeeded in uniting the Infinity Stones and creating the Snap which reduced all life in the Universe by half.

Five years after the snap, Stark retired, married, and had a daughter, Morgan.

Stark rejoined the Avengers after he had figured out a way to travel through space and time. They plotted to reacquire the Infinity Stones to resurrect those who had died.

Stark sacrificed himself in the battle of Earth to eliminate an alternative timeline version of the Thanos army. He left behind a legacy as one of the most influential superheroes.
