A leading member of the Avengers and king of Asgard, Thor is the God of Thunder who wields the power of the enchanted hammer Mjolnir.

Played by Chris Hemsworth in the MCU movies, Thor has become an established hero across Marvel Comics and the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

As the Norse god of thunder, Thor can summon each of the elements of the storm: lightning, rain, wind and snow.

Thor in Marvel Comics

In the Marvel Comics, Thor is the God of Thunder and member of the Asgardians. This group of powerful human like beings originated in the dimension of Asgard, which they also refer to as the Realm Eternal.

Thor’s status in Asgard is as son of Odin, the father of the Asgardians. As gods to the Vikings in Europe, Thor was a central figure in Norse mythology.

Assisted by his powerful hammer Mjolnir, Thor had no problem in becoming the greatest and strongest warrior throughout the Ten Realms.

Although Thor was a mighty fighter, he lacked good judgement and often disobeyed Odin. Eventually, Odin ran out of patience and exiled his unruly son to Earth, known as Midgard by the Asgardians.

Thor was given the human identity of medical student, Donald Blake, and had was stripped of his memory and his powers.

Once Thor had learned how to be humble and fight for just causes, this godly powers were returned to him. Thor went on to become a genuine Earth hero and a founding member of the Avengers.

Ragnarök Cycle

There are many different events and stories relating to Thor’s origins within the Ragnarök Cycle. As it is a centre of norse mythology, many of the tales involving Thor and Asgard are lost in the depths of time.

The Severed Eye of Odin was a mythical eye had grown up to a huge size and had gone on to develop the ability to tell others of events. It told the blonde haired Thor that there had been a previous Thor, son of a different Odin with red hair.

Another tale includes the Midgard Serpent, which was slain by Thor during an epic struggle, though it killed him with a lethal injection of venom. This took place at Ragnarök, a destroyed version of a previous Asgard.

During Ragnarök, Odin was among the dead, it was a new Odin that went on to father the Thor featured in Marvel Universe. The exact and full origin of this mighty hero may never be known.

Founding the Avengers

Thor went on to be a founding member of a group of Earth based heroes, the Avengers, fending off attacks by trickster god Loki.

Together the group had stopped Hulk, and Thor carried on working with them whenever the Earth was threatened.

Despite remaining a member of the team, Thor left the Avengers on several occasions to divert his attention to other matters.

Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe

Thor was portrayed within the Marvel Cinematic Universe by actor Chris Hemsworth, beginning with the 2011 movie Thor.

Thor became a significant character in the MCU, starring in the major Infinity Saga movies including:

• Thor: Ragnarok (2017)

In Asgard and later New Asgard, Thor went on to be king, though his father Odin eventually removed him from the throne and exiled him to Earth. He was punished after his mistakes caused a war with Jotunheim.

Not only did exile to Earth teach him to be humble, it allowed him to discover true love with Jane Foster. Thor goes on to willing sacrifice his own life to safe others. Odin decided to bring him back to life with all godly attributes restored.

His return home is cut short while he has to stop Loki conquering the Earth.

Thor and the MCU Avengers

It was S.H.I.E.L.D that was responsible for bringing Thor into the Avengers in order to defeat Loki, his adapted brother. Thor played a key part in winning the Battle of New York, during, which Loki was taken prisoner and put on trial in Asgard.

Thor The Dark World

The Asgardian Army, with Thor in its ranks, end the War of the Nine Realms. Peace did not last too long, as the Second Dark Elf Conflict broke out. The Dark Elf army was then defeated by Thor.

However, Thor lost an eye while he was fighting Hela. To defeat her, Thor asked Loki to unleash Ragnarök, which destroyed Asgard in the process. Afterwards, he and the remaining Asgardians decide to reform Asgard on Earth, Thor having become their new king.

Avengers Age of Ultron

After beating HYDRA, the next threat that the Avengers have to deal with is one unintentionally caused by Tony Stark. Ultron was designed by Stark to defend Earth. Instead, it attempts to wipe out the human race and replace it with it’s own sentries.

Thor : Ragnarök

Thor met Hela after the death of their father Odin, she was the Goddess of Death. She defeated her brother and banished him to Sakaar, and destroyed his hammer.

Thor was compelled to take part in the Contest of Champions and has to fight the Hulk. The pair work together to escape with the Valkyrie and save Asgard.

Avengers Infinity War

Thor and his colleagues do not make it back to Earth, as they are ambushed by Thanos, who takes the Tesseract and murders Loki while doing so.

Thanos believes that Thor is dead when his body was thrown out of the vessel. Yet, Thor survived and was subsequently rescued by the Guardians of the Galaxy.

Thor is able to forge himself a new weapon he calls Stormbreaker, assisted in the crafting process by Eitri. Together again with the Avengers and the army of Wakanda, the Outriders are overcome and Thanos is fought.

The Avengers are unable to stop Thanos in his quest to collect the Infinity Stones, and Thanos eliminates half the life in the universe with a Snap of his Infinity Gauntlet.

Avengers Endgame

The Avengers succeed in ambushing Thanos and the Black Order. Under torture, Thanos confirms that he had ordered the Stones to be smashed, and that the Titan had completed that order.

With the Stones destroyed, the mass destruction caused by Thanos cannot be reversed. A furious Thor kills Thanos with Stormbreaker before going to New Asgard.

Thor then does nothing for five years apart from getting drunk and eating too much. In that time, other Avengers work on finding out how they can travel in time to reverse Thanos’ deeds.

It is Hulk with Rocket who travel to New Asgard to bring the news to the unfit Thor that they can now travel in time.

Reunited with the Avengers, he joins in the Battle of Earth alongside Captain America and Iron Man. The heroes eventually defeat Thanos, but not before Tony Stark sacrifices himself in his last act as Iron Man to save the Earth.

After Stark’s funeral, Thor tells everyone that he is giving up the Asgardian throne to join the Guardians of the Galaxy.
