Everyone Wants To Know – What Does Groot Say in The Guardians of the Galaxy Movies?! If you’ve been watching the GOTG in the MCU movies we have looked at what those three words “I Am Groot” mean in each scene.

Asleep for the danger, awake for the money

On Xandar Rocket Raccoon and Groot compete with Gamora to capture Peter Quill for the bounty on his head.After they are all captured, they realise that by working together they could sell the orb for a lot more.

Rocket Raccoon : I’ll split the profit between the three of us.

Groot: I am Groot.

Rocket Raccoon : Four of us. Asleep for the danger, awake for the money, as per frickin’ usual!

Drop the device immediately

Imprisoned in the Kyln, Groot, Gamora, Starlord and Rocket Raccot attempt an escape.

Watchtower Guard: Prisoner, drop the device immediately and retreat to your cell, or we will open fire.

Groot: I am Groot!

I never thought I’d meet a Groot

At the Collector’s Museum, the Collector is impressed of meeting a Groot.

Collector: What is that thing there?

Groot: I am Groot.

Collector: I never thought I’d meet a Groot. Sir, you must allow me to pay you now so that I may own your carcass. At the moment of your death, of course.

They’re the only friends that we ever had

When Quill and Gamora were captured by the Ravagers Groot insitst that Rocket Racoon, Drax and himself try to rescue their friends.

Groot: I am Groot.

Rocket Raccoon : Save them? How?

Groot: I am Groot.”

Rocket Raccoon: I know they’re the only friends that we ever had, but there’s an army of Ravagers around them. And there’s only two of us!”

They are ungrateful

When Groot, Drax and Rocket Racoon fly to the Ravagers ship, the Eclector they threaten to blow up the Milano if their friends are not released. When Star-Lord and Gamora criticized the rescue team of nearly blowing them up Groot calls them Ungreatful.

Groot: I am Groot.

Rocket Raccoon: They are ungrateful!

We are Groot

When the Milano became damaged after flying through the Dark Aster Groot used his body to form a protective shield for the crew. As Groot prepared to sacrifice himself to save his friends Rocket begged him not to do it or he’ll die. He responds, we are Groot.

Groot : We are Groot.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2

They were not looking at you funny

When the Guardians of the Galaxy took on a job to defeat the Abilisk, Baby Groot began attacking some of the Orlonis. He thought they were looking at him funny.

Groot: I am Groot.

Rocket Raccoon: They were not looking at you funny.

That’s why you don’t like hats?

Trying to assist Rocket and Yondu Udonta escape from The Ravagers prison cell, Baby Groot was asked to go find Undonta’s Yaka Arrow to help them all escape.

Misunderstanding Undonta’s instructions, Groot put the Ravager symbol on his head thinking that he had been asked to wear it as a hat. Grood then let Rocket know why he dosn’t like hats.

Groot: I am Groot.

Rocket Raccoon: One minute you think someone has a weird shaped head, the next minute you realize part of that head is a hat. That’s why you don’t like hats?

Which button is the button you’re supposed to push?

Rocket explains to baby groot how to activate a bomb designed to destroy Ego’s core. He asks Groot to repeat back to him the instructions. Groot points to the button Rocket asked him not to press.

Groot: I am Groot. I am Groot. I am Groot.

Rocket Raccoon: No! That’s exactly what you just said! How’s that even possible? Which button is the button you’re supposed to push? Point to it. No!

Yeah, he did call you twig

At Yondu’s funeral, the Guardians gathered around Yondu’s body while Quill gives an eulogy. Groot remarks on how Yondu nicknamed him “twig”

Groot: I am Groot

Rocket Raccoon: Yeah, he did call you twig.

You gotta clean up your room

Guardians of the Galaxy 2 post credits scene: Teenager Groot is wasting time playing computer games. When Quill asked him to tidy his room, Groot accuses him of being boring.

Peter Quill: Dude, seriously? You gotta clean up your room, it’s a complete mess.

Groot: I am Groot.

Peter Quill: I am not boring, you’re boring. You know what’s boring? Sitting there playing that mind-numbing game. What’s boring is me tripping over your vines everyday. I’m not boring.

Groot: I am Groot.

Peter Quill: And now I know how Yondu felt.

Infinity War

Whoa! Language!

When the Guardians receive a distress call, teenage Groot is too preocupied with his handheld device.

Peter Quill: Groot, put that thing away. Now. I don’t want to tell you again. Groot?

Groot: I am Groot.

Peter Quill: Whoa! Language!

I am Steve Rogers

During the battle at Wakanda, Thor is reunited with Steve Rogers. He introduces Groot as Tree. Steve Rogers assuming that Groot was introducing himself, offered his own name.

Thor: Oh, by the way, this is a friend of mine. Tree.

Groot: I am Groot.

Captain America: I am Steve Rogers.

The Thanos Snap

When Thanos collected all of the Infinity Stones, Groot was one of the heros to disapear following the Snap. Rocket Racoon called helplessly as Groot faded away.

Groot: I… am… Groot…

Rocket Raccoon: No, Groot… no, no, no, no! Oh… Groot. No…
