The Star Wars hit TV series The Mandalorian, follows the adventures of Din Djarin during the New Republic era. The first two series depict the story of the rescue and return home of a young force-sensitive creature named Grogu from the same species as Master Yoda.

Who is Din Djarin / The Mandalorian?

Din Djarin is a human Mandalorian bounty hunter living during the New Republic era. With his Mandalorian armour, IB-94 blaster pistol, Amban sniper rifle and distinctive beskar (Mandalorian iron) helmet, he was a well-equipped and enigmatic stranger with a past shrouded in mystery.

Orphaned during the Republic era, Djarin was raised by the Children of the Watch, a group that had broken off from mainstream Mandalorian society. Unaware of this, he believed that all Mandalorians followed the Children’s beliefs.

Trained to become a warrior, Djarin eventually joined a covert group on the planet Nevarro called the Tribe, which was affiliated with the Children of the Watch. Over time he became a battle-hardened man of few words and a formidable bounty hunter in an increasingly dangerous galaxy.

The Bounty Hunter’s Guild

After the fall of the Galactic Empire, Djarin joined the Bounty Hunter’s Guild, making a name for himself collecting bounties as he travelled in his personal starship the Razor Crest across the galaxy’s Outer Rim Territories, far from the authority of the New Republic.

In 9 ABY, around five years after the fall of the Empire, Djarin was hired on Nevarro by a client representing an Imperial remnant faction who offered him a reward for the retrieval of an asset located on a planet called Arvala-7. During the mission, he met an Ugnaught named Kuiil who helped him find his target.

During his search, Djarin encountered the bounty hunting droid IG-11, who, not knowing he was part of the Bounty Hunters’ Guild, shot him. After Djarin verified his identity, he and the droid entered a building in the mercenary encampment where his target was located.

The Mandalorian and Grogu

Upon finding the asset itself, the two bounty hunters discovered it was in fact a Force-sensitive child. Although he was unaware of it at the time, the infant, Grogu, was a child of the same species as the Jedi Grandmaster Yoda.

Soon after finding Grogu, Djarin shot IG-11, who intended to kill him, saving the infant, who he was tasked with bringing in alive. During his time on Arvala-7, the bounty hunter discovered the infant’s force sensitivity and the two began to form a bond. Nonetheless, the Mandalorian brought Grogu back to his client and collected his reward.

Feeling remorse for leaving Grogu to what seemed like a cruel fate, Djarin entered the facility where the child was being kept and rescued him from the Imperials stationed there, later fending off bounty hunters from the Guild with help from the Mandalorian Tribe.

Djarin and his young charge would then embark on various adventures around the galaxy. These included an encounter with a former rebel shock trooper named Carasynthia Dune, a job on the desert world Tatooine and a run-in with a group of mercenaries.

Greef Karga

A Guild agent, Greef Karga, who wanted to make amends for his actions when Grogu was rescued, contacted Djarin and offered to work with the Mandalorian to drive out the Imperials who had taken control of Nevarro’s capital city.

Gathering his allies Cara Dune, Kuiil and a re-programmed IG-11, Djarin met with Karga on Nevarro. The bounty hunter and his allies entered the city and fought the Imperials led by Moff Gideon before retreating to the Tribe’s covert base after facing fierce opposition.

The Armourer

Another Mandalorian at the covert base known as “The Armourer” tasked Djarin with returning Grogu to his people and forming a new clan. After dealing with Moff Gideon and his soldiers, the bounty hunter departed Nevarro with Grogu and began to search for the child’s people.

As Grogu and the Mandalorian wandered the galaxy, they embarked on many missions together. These included a run-in with Cobb Vanth, the Marshal of Mos Pelgo, a meeting with another group of Mandalorians and another mission alongside Cara Dune and Greef Karga on Nevarro.

Eventually, they found their way to Corvus and met a former Jedi named Ahsoka Tano who could communicate with Grogu using the Force. She discovered the child’s name and history and related this information to Djarin.

The bounty hunter then assisted Tano in liberating the city of Calodan from Morgan Elsbeth, an Imperial magistrate.

As a token of her gratitude, the former Jedi gave the Mandalorian Elsbeth’s indestructible beskar spear and directed him to a planet called Tython where Grogu could reach out to find any other Jedi willing to train him in the use of the Force.

Boba Fett’s Armour

On Tython, as Grogu was trying to reach a Jedi, Djarin had an encounter with Boba Fett, the son of another Mandalorian.

Fett demanded Djarin return his armour to him, which had been given to the Mandalorian earlier by Cobb Vanth who had received it from some Jawa scavengers, in exchange for not harming the child.

Before he could hand over the armour, Moff Gideon’s Imperial remnant attacked and captured Grogu.

After Djarin gave him his armour, Fett agreed to help the Mandalorian rescue Grogu, and, with the help of Cara Dune, Migs Mayfield and Fenec Shand they located Gideon’s light cruiser. Alongside his allies, Djarin stormed the cruiser and located the child.

After defeating Gideon in combat and claiming his Darksaber, Djarin unintentionally became the potential heir to the title of Mand’alor. Unfortunately, the heroes were then cornered by a platoon of dark troopers. Luckily, they were rescued by Luke Skywalker, the Jedi who Grogu had reached out to.

After destroying the dark troopers, Djarin says his goodbyes to Grogu, who is going to leave the ship in the care of Skywalker and promised the child they would see each other again.

What is Din Djarin’s Mandalorian clan?

Clan Mudhorn is a Mandalorian clam formed during the New Republic era composed of Grogu, a Force-sensitive foundling, and the bounty hunter Din Djarin, who served as its leader.

The signet of this clan was the skull of a Mudhorn, which was bestowed upon them by the Armourer of the Tribe. The design of the signet was a reference to the Mudhorn creature that the pair killed on Arvala-7.

Who were the Mandalorians who saved Din Djarin?

Death Watch started out as a terrorist cell operating on Mandalore’s moon, Concordia. The group, formed after the Mandalorian Civil War, stood in opposition to the planet’s pacifist rule.

The group was active before the events of Star Wars: Episode I, ‘The Phantom Menace’, which took place 41 years before the story told in ‘The Mandalorian’ when the Jedis Obi-Wan Kenobi and Qui-Gon Jin protected the Duchess Satine Kryze from the insurgents who would later become Death Watch.

Under the leadership of Bo-Katan, Death Watch rescued young Din Djarin in 19 BBY, the year that the events in Star Wars: Episode III, ‘Revenge of the Sith’, took place.

If Din Djarin was between 8 and 11 years old at this time, he was born between 30-27 BBY. This means he was 36 to 39 years old during ‘The Mandalorian’ saga.

Did Boba Fett appear in The Mandalorian?

Despite teasing his return in season 1 and a cameo in the first episode of the show’s next season, Boba Fett didn’t make his full comeback into the Star Wars universe until the sixth episode of The Mandalorian season 2, “The Tragedy”.

The episode, directed by Robert Rodriguez, finds Boba and Fennac Shand (Ming-Na Wen) tracking Din Djarin to the planet Tython, where Fett demands the Mandalorian return his armour to him.

Although he is cloaked at first, Fett soon reveals his scarred face. It isn’t pretty and speaks volumes about where he’d been and what he’d gone through to get to his confrontation with Djarin.

The reveal was a long time coming for actor Temuera Morrison, who played the bounty hunter’s father Jango Fett in 2002’s ‘Star Wars: Attack of the Clones’.

As explained in that film, Jango Fett served as the genetic blueprint for the Republic’s clone army, requesting that he be given one unaltered clone to raise as his son. This child, named Boba Fett, would go on to become a bounty hunter like his father before him.

What is Baby Yoda’s name?

In the 5th episode of ‘The Mandalorian’ season 2, Baby Yoda’s name is finally revealed to be Grogu. The reveal plays out very casually when the Jedi Ahsoka Tano says the baby’s name while explaining his backstory to the Mandalorian.

The compassionate Ahsoka is able to connect with the child without words, instead, communicating with the infant through memories and experiences. Through this connection, she learns the baby’s name and relays this information to Djarin and the audience.

Can a Mandalorian be a Jedi?

Yes, in Star Wars canon, one Mandalorian was made a Jedi Knight. Tarre Viszla of the House Viszla became a Jedi and created a special lightsaber called the Darksaber.

After Viszla passed away, the Jedi interred the Darksaber in the Temple on Coruscant. After his death, no other Mandalorian became a Jedi Knight.

Many years after Tarre Viszla’s passing, members of his clan broke into the Temple and brought the Darksaber back to Mandalore.

During the Clone Wars, the terrorist group called Death Watch allied with the Sith Darth Maul and Savage Oppress to overthrow Duchess Satie, who ruled Mandalore.

The leader of Death Watch, Pre-Vizsla of House Viszla was in possession of the Darksaber at that time.

Is the Darksaber more powerful than a lightsaber?

Created by the first Mandalorian ever inducted into the Jedi Order, Tarre Vizsla, prior to 1032 BBY, the ancient Darksaber was a unique, black-bladed lightsaber.

The weapon was kept in the Jedi Temple after Vizsla’s death but was later stolen by members of his house who were in conflict with the Jedi during the fall of the Old Republic.

The weapon was passed down from generation to generation by the ancestors of Pre Vizsla, who held onto the sword even after the pacifist ideals of the New Mandalorians replaced the warrior ways of Mandalore.

The sword itself had a crystal built into it that served as a conduit for Force energy. The thoughts and actions of the wielder guided the blade’s current of power, often producing an electrical effect in response to its user’s emotional state.

Like other lightsabers, the Darksaber could not cut through beskar but it was capable of parrying a blow from another such blade, with the Darksaber and other lightsabers being drawn to each other by an almost magnetic pull.

The Darksaber was respected by the Mandalorians as it was seen as a symbol of the leadership of the House Vizsla and later the group called Death Watch.

Why are all the Mandalorians dead?

As mentioned in episode 6 of ‘The Mandalorian’, most of the inhabitants of Mandalore are dead. But what happened to Din Djarin’s people and their planet?

The majority of Mandalore’s inhabitants were killed in the Empire’s Great Purge, with the survivors going into hiding. The group called the Tribe were among these few survivors.

They were largely wiped out by the Imperial Remnant after they helped Din Djarin flee Nevarro, but the Armourer suspected that some of them had escaped.

The Armourer herself was last seen slaughtering a large number of Stormtroopers but we don’t know what happened to her after this fight.

Mandalore itself was directly impacted by the events of Star Wars Episode II, ‘Attack of the Clones’, but the planet’s role in the conflict wasn’t shown in the film, with this story being told in the animated spin-off series, ‘Star Wars: The Clone Wars’.

Despite the Mandalorians trying to remain neutral in the conflict, the planet was the site of some of the war’s biggest battles, including one known as the Siege of Mandalore.

Darth Maul, who survived his “death” in Star Wars Episode 1, ‘The Phantom Menace’, travelled to the planet and took control of a group called Death Watch, which opposed the Mandalorian government’s pacifist views.

In the midst of the Siege of Mandalore, the infamous Order 66 was given and everything fell into chaos as a result. After Ahsoka Tano and Darth Maul escaped, the Republic, which would later evolve into the Empire, seized control of the planet,

Over time, some Mandalorian clans grew tired of Imperial rule and rose up against it, leading to a civil war. The constant infighting between the clans made it easy for the Empire to remain in control.

Some of the clans died off due to the incessant fighting, but a few managed to survive. Regardless, even those clans that did so suffered a great deal under the Imperial occupation and were never able to regain their legendary reputations.

The harm done to Mandalorian civilization during the Clone Wars has so far been shown to be irreversible, and, as things currently stand in the Star Wars universe, the Mandalorians are a dying race.
