Who Is Baby Yoda?

Grogu, known to many as “The Child” or “Baby Yoda” is a Force-sensitive infant from the same species as Master Yoda.

Little is known about the Child’s past as he had been separated from his parents at an early age and taken to the Jedi Temple on Coruscant.

Born in 41 BBY, Grogu grew up on Coruscant and was secretly trained in the ways of the Jedi.

Following the siege of the temple, Grogu was taken to a hideout run by Nikto mercenaries on the planet Arvala-7. At 50 years old, which is still an infant age for his species, he was sought by a Mandalorian bounty hunter named Din Djarin.

Djarin was originally hired by Imperials to capture the Baby Yoda but decided to defect and hide Grogu from them. After this decision, Djarin returned to the planet Nevarro in an effort to keep Grogu safe.

Grogu became a Mandalorian foundling, joining The Mandalorian on his various adventures. Djarin took it upon himself to return Grogu to the Jedi who raised him.

Din Djarin and Baby Yoda searched the galaxy to seek out any remaining Jedi. On the advice of Ahsoka Tano, Grogu and The Mandalorian travelled to Tython, where the Child could use the Force to transmit a message to the Jedi.

In this process, Grogu was kidnapped by Gideon’s Imperial Forces. After a harrowing rescue, Djarin was able to give Grogu to Luke Skywalker for protection. Skywalker agreed to take care of Grogu, and teach him the ways of the force.

What Species Is Yoda and Grogu?

Jedi Grand Master Yoda and Grogu’s actual species name is still a mystery. There are not many of them throughout the galaxy, and sightings are even rarer.

The few members of this species that have been seen are all Force-sensitive. Additionally, there’s still no knowledge of what planet is the actual origin of this species.

George Lucas introduced Yoda in The Empire Strikes Back to reinforce the Buddhist philosophy that power and wisdom can be harnessed by unlikely individuals.

When Lucas was asked about the origin of Yoda’s species, Lucas remained cryptic on the subject. The backstory of Yoda and his race was actively discouraged by Lucasfilm making the character more mysterious.

Star Wars fans often refer to Yoda’s race as “Tridactyls,” after the number of toes on their feet, but that does not represent a canon species name.

Not much is known about this species, but it is known that there are two sexes: male and female. Both sexes of this species are small in size, often compared to that of a human child.

They are distinguished by their large eyes, green skin, and pointed ears. Additionally, rather than normal hands, they have three fingers with claws on the end. It is not confirmed if they have a carnivorous diet, but there are theories that they eat amphibians.

This species also can grow hair, often lacking pigment like white or grey hair. They often look old from birth but have a very impressive lifespan of several centuries.

Generally, infancy lasts at least fifty years, but these individuals can still use Force powers even in infancy. This species is also capable of complex thoughts and can communicate via the Force and understand speech as infants.

It’s generally believed that this species reaches full maturity around one hundred years old, as is seen in Jedi Grand Master Yoda’s training.

Is Baby Yoda Actually Yoda?

A common misconception, because of the name “Baby Yoda” is that Grogu is the infant form of Yoda, but that isn’t true. The timelines are quite different, and they are just two beings of the same species.

We can confirm this because Disney+’s The Mandalorian takes place after the original trilogy of Star Wars, in which Yoda has already died in Return of the Jedi. While they are different, it hasn’t been confirmed or denied that they could be related to one another.

Grogu’s Powers And Abilities

As a force-sensitive being, Grogu is able to harness the power of the Force from infancy. His first display of this power was when he lifted a giant mudhorn beast into the air, just for a couple of moments, in order to save the Mandalorian from an attack.

One note for his species is that the use of the Force as an infant is very strenuous, in this case, Grogu was knocked unconscious for a few hours after the feat.

However, as they grow older and mature, they’re able to withstand the side effects of using the force more effectively. Like other Jedi knights have shown, Grogu’s own emotions can also play a role in his specific force powers.

For example, Grogu used his anger when he force choked Cara Dune, because he thought that she was harming the Mandalorian when they were arm wrestling.

Along with the abilities of telekinesis, Grogu can also use the Force to heal others. This was exemplified by when Grogu used the force to cure poisoning by touching The Mandalorian’s injuries.

Grogu can also use another famous move, known as the force block, in which a barrier is created to block enemies from getting close to those being protected. This is shown when Grogu blocked an attacking Incinerator Trooper.

As Grogu grows older, it becomes clear that he is gaining more and more skill as he practices the force. This is how we know that he will be in good hands as a pupil to Luke Skywalker.

Does Grogu Die in The Mandalorian?

No, Grogu does not die in The Mandalorian. The tale currently ends with Djarin handing Grogu to Luke Skywalker, who we presume will take under his wing to teach the ways of the force.

Knowing how long their species can live via what we’ve seen from Yoda, it’s safe to assume that Grogu can live for centuries into the future.

However, events in the sequel trilogy have led many to fear that the fate of Baby Yoda will be that of the other students of Luke Skywalker at the hands of Kylo Ren.

Therefore hand over of Grogu from Din Djarin to Luke Skywalker was a bittersweet ending to the story arc.

Is Grogu killed by Kylo Ren?

Following season 2 of The Mandalorian, we have no evidence at this time of the fate of Baby Yoda, but the darkest fate of The Child seems to be the most likely outcome.

We learn in the sequel trilogy that Kylo Ren burns down Lukes academy killing all the students training within. We have yet to learn if Grogu will be among those massacred by Ren.

If Grogu is trained by Luke Skywalker to become a Jedi, it is estimated that the training will take several years.

We do not have a fixed time for Jedi training to be completed so it is possible that Grogu has completed his Jedi training and is elsewhere when the academy is destroyed.

What Is Grogu’s Personality Like?

It’s safe to say that Grogu is a very stubborn child, but it’s hard to tell if he will simply grow out of this trait as he matures. Djarin himself refers to Grogu as a “stubborn” child early on in the series.

Grogu is very sweet at times and has clearly formed an attachment to Din Djarin. Grogu sees Djarin as a father figure, which is why Grogu gets emotional about protecting Djarin at all costs.

This is confirmed when Ahsoka Tano senses fear and anger within Grogu when Djarin is in trouble.

Grogu’s stubbornness is also supported when Grogu was completely uncooperative with Tano’s efforts to try and measure how powerful Grogu’s grasp on the force was.

Grogu has awareness that he needs to conceal his powers for his own protection, but it is clear that Grogu has the insight to still use his powers when it suits him.

For example, he used the Force to obtain the food he wanted and was able to change the control nob on the Razor Crest. And of course, he always turns to the force when he wants to protect Din Djarin.

Grogu first makes an appearance in the very first episode of Disney+’s hit TV show, The Mandalorian, which was released in November of 2019.

The character of Grogu was originally inspired by a sketch made by Dave Filoni, who is an executive producer on the show. From this sketch, the art department helped to bring it to life by fleshing out the details of the character.

Originally, Jon Favreau, another executive producer on the show, wanted Grogu to be a puppet onset, similar to how Yoda was presented in the original trilogy. However the CGI proved to be much more effective, and easier to show emotions, actions, and expressions.

During the production of the first season, Grogu was not referred to as “Baby Yoda”, but rather as “The Child”, “The Being”, and “The Precious”.

When the character was first revealed, news spread like wildfire, with fans affectionately referring to Grogu as “Baby Yoda”. The craze was so popular, that the name stuck.

After this initial burst, there was high demand for “Baby Yoda” merchandise, but Disney had delayed this production while they grappled with figuring out whether to brand him as Baby Yoda or stay true to his character by offering “Grogu” or “The Child” merchandise.

Disney continued to be careful in how they referred to Grogu in their brand messaging, but as time went on they learned to embrace the “Baby Yoda” fandom.

Grogu is a very important character in the Mandalorian series. He has been the crucial character in the first story arc, and it is safe to say that he will be a part of the future development of the story.

As time goes on, we can only hope that we will see more of Grogu and his relationship with Luke Skywalker as well as how he grows into an adult, much like how Yoda grew into an adult before becoming a Jedi Master.
