Black Panther in Marvel Comics

The Black Panther was created for Marvel Comics by creator Stan Lee in partnership with leading artist Jack Kirby. Black Panther made his first comic book appearance back in July 1966 in Fantastic Four #52.

Black Panther uses his abilities as the defender of his home country Wakanda, but also teams up with the Avengers to protect the Earth.

Black Panther is an alias used by T’Challa, king of Wakanda, a kingdom hidden within the continent of Africa. Wakanda is the most advanced country in terms of technology on the whole of Earth in this period.

The identity of the Black Panther was linked directly to holding the kingship of Wakanda.

T’Challa is helped to stay in his position by a mixture of science, tribal practices / divine empowerment, as well as enhanced physical training.

He was a trained fighter with plenty of skill that was in the fortunate position to be able to use the wealth and advanced technology of his kingdom to help the human race.

Black Panther Powers and Abilities

Devine Empowerment

T’ Challa / Black Panther was able to enhance his strength as a fighter from the powers gained from consuming the Heart Shaped herb. Black Panther combined the powers with his other skills and strengths.

Genius Intelligence

Black Panther is a man of great intellectual ability. Indeed, he is a polymath genius who also has a photographic memory to further enhance his capabilities. He had many academic qualifications to demonstrate his ability, including a Physics PHD from Oxford University.

T’Challa was among only eight people globally when it came to holding engineering and physical science knowledge.

Master Martial Artist

The Black Panther became very accomplished in martial arts, helped by extensive training from his early childhood.

T’Challa mastered various styles of martial arts from across the world. Arguably, there has been nobody to match his mastery of armed and unarmed combat.

Physical Strength

Those who met Black Panther or saw him in action were surprised by how much physical strength he held. He was reported to be able to lift almost 800 lbs in weight.

Black Panther Habit

The Black Panther wore a suit that was capable of absorbing vibrations as well as vibrating objects.

This suit gave him better if not complete protection from the likes of bullets, sword thrusts and knife attacks. The suit changed it’s appearance over the years yet always offered protection against vibrations using its Vibranium lacing.

Black Panther in the Marvel Cinematic Universe

T’Challa, as portrayed by Chadwick Boseman in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, made his first appearance in Captain America: Civil War (2016).

The character appeared in the self-titled Black Panther movie of 2018. Boseman appeared in the following Avengers films, making his final live action appearance in Avengers: Endgame (2019).

Boseman died following a battle with colon cancer On August 28, 2020.

Playing the role of T’Challa, Boseman starred in the following movies across the MCU.

Captain America Civil War

T’Challa became the king of Wakanda and therefore the holder of the Black Panther mantel after the death of his father, T’Chaka who was killed by a bomb explosion.

That bomb attack was widely believed to have been ordered by the Winter Soldier, and Black Panther vows to avenge his father’s death.

The Black Panther would later learn that Helmut Zemo was the real mastermind of the attack. He takes Zemo prisoner and then hands him over to Everett Ross.

Black Panther’s desire for revenge against the Winter Soldier led to his involvement with Captain America and the Avengers Civil War. During that war, he decided to fight on the side of Tony Stark / Iron Man.

Black Panther Movie

The Black Panther Movie was released in Los Angeles in February 2018 and nationwide a month later. Across the globe, this film grossed over $1.3 billion.

T’Challa received his full coronation after he returned to Wakanda, and formally became the Black Panther. He attempts to trace and capture Ulysees Klaue proved to be unsuccessful.

Meanwhile, his position of king was successfully challenged by Erik Killmonger who defeated him in a duel.

T’Challa with help from M’Baku and his family defeated Killmonger and regained the title to his throne.

Avengers Infinity War and Endgame

Black Panther decided to help the Avengers after he was informed of Thanos’ plans to destroy half of all creation by gaining the Infinity Stones.

T’Challa agreed to allow the Avengers to hide Vision in the city so that Shuri could try and remove the Mind Stone.

Wakanda became the target of Thanos’ invading forces, as Black Panther had led his army against the Black Order.

The army of Wakanda was overpowered as Thanos completed gained the final Infinity Stone and wiped out half of life in the Universe, including that of Black Panther.

Black Panther was resurrected by Hulk five years following the Snap, as he joined the Avengers in a final battle against an alternate Thanos.

Finally, the Avengers defeated the Mad Titan, although Tony Stark sacrificed his life to help win the battle. Following the Infinity Saga, T’Challa returned to his kingdom of Wakanda and was reunited with his sister and mother.
