Harley Quinn
Once a psychiatrist at Gotham City’s Arkham Asylum, Harley Quinn evolved into one of the most recognisable villains from DC comics.
Harley Quinn first appeared as a romantic interest for the Joker in Batman: The Animated Series on September 11, 1992. As the popularity of the character grew, Quinn became part of the DC comic canon.
Created by Paul Dini and Bruce Timm, Harley Quinn has gone on to become a stand-out character in the Suicide Squad and Birds of Prey movies.
Who is Harley Quinn From DC Comics?
Harley Quinn is one of the most intriguing characters of the DC universe. In the past, she wasn’t that that celebrated among DC universe fans. In the present, she is singlehandedly one of the most popular DC characters.
This is due to the success of the films Suicide Squad and Birds of Prey. Today, Harley Quinn is no longer just “the Joker’s really hot (but crazy) girlfriend”. She has a strong solo career that makes her supervillain and anti-hero with her own following.
Origins of Harley Quinn
Harleen Quinzel started her career as a psychiatrist. While working at Arkham Asylum she met the Joker. She was one of his patients. However, Quinzel took a liking to the deranged lunatic. Eventually, she helped the Joker to escape Arkham.
Harley and Joker’s relationship was extremely toxic. The Joker once tied her to a rocket and launched it. However, it did not blow up as intended and Harley survived the ordeal.
This incident supposedly helped Quinn to come to her senses about her relationship with the Joker. They loved each other but the Joker proved to be too much of a “joke” for her.
While he cared for Harley, he frequently betrayed her and did other nasty things to prove that she was replaceable. Still, Quinn couldn’t resist the clown-faced villain. She loved who she loved.
Her fellow villain in crime, Poison Ivy, tried hard to get Harley to permanently leave the Joker. She helped her throughout the years to accomplish this purpose.
They became good friends. Still, Harley Quinn loved her some Joker and just couldn’t stop going back for more. He was her Alpha Male and no matter how bad he treated her, she had to come back for more.
Throughout the years Harley Quinn has been teamed up with various criminal groups. She was a member of the Secret Society of Super-Villains, the Secret Six, and the Female Furies. Most people know her from her time with the Suicide Squad. Believe it or not, she was also a part of the Green Lantern Corps.
Harley Quinn’s Criminal Career
Quinn’s involvement with the Joker proved to be futile. She eventually had to leave him. Poison Ivy was glad that her friend got away from the abusive criminal maniac.
Just don’t forget that Quinn was a nutcase herself. She eventually decided to start her own female criminal organization called the Quintets.
The Quintets didn’t get off to a good start and the crime organization quickly failed. They had a lot of problems pulling off heists and carrying out crimes.
When the Quintets came across the Riddler and his gang, they experienced another setback. However, this event caused Quinn’s organization to rebel against her. They decided to put out a hit on her. She was being tracked by most of the low-life’s, scoundrels, and assassins in Gotham city. For a while, she manages to avoid them.
Killer Kroc (from the Suicide Squad fame) nearly took her down. However, he failed. A guy named Matches Malone helped her to avoid death with his hands. Cat Woman then teamed up with Quinn and used her services to get revenge against a rich guy who wronged her.
Quinn helped Cat Woman to rip off his money. Quinn then had to avoid the assassins and continued life as a criminal. Quinn and other female villains in Gotham City always had a thing about overpowering rich guys and taking their money.
She eventually teamed up with the Riddler and Poison Ivy to look for the Black Mask after Batman had supposedly died. Harley had to rescue her pet hyenas at various points in her career.
Her main objective is to remain a supervillain (though she acts sometimes as an anti-hero). She also wants to be one of the most successful crime bosses who control the city of Gotham.
Harley Quinn Powers and Abilities
Poison Ivy’s Serum: Poison Ivy is a villain from the DC universe. She is known for her run-ins with Batman. However, she is also known for her interactions with Harley Quinn.
Poison Ivy was a good friend of Quinn who wanted to get her away from the Joker.
Once Quinn became a “bad girl” Ivy decided to give her a plant serum that would give her some enhanced abilities. Remember Quinn is just a regular woman, but Ivy’s serum changed some things up for her.
Toxic Immunity:
Quinn has become immune to various toxins and Ivy’s own poisonous touch.
Underwater Breathing:
Harley can now breathe underwater due to Ivy’s serum. The serum contained Aquavilla vines that allow her to do this.
Acrobat:
She now has athletic skills, agility, and gymnastic abilities due to Ivy’s serum.
Psychiatry:
She is also a brilliant psychologist even though she is insane. Psychoanalysis is one of her specialities.
Harley Quinn’s Appearance
Throughout the years, Harley Quinn has taken on many different appearances. There are two outfits or styles that define Harley Quinn the most. First is her jester outfit.
She normally wears this when she is seen with the Joker. This outfit defined her in the early days of her creation. Over the years, Quinn’s look evolved to something more provocative.
Today, many people love the temptress side of Quinn. She wears short shorts, a tight belly shirt, and has two pigtails. One of her pigtails is red and the other is blue.
She sometimes appears in the formal wear of a psychologist. When she wears this outfit she dons a skirt, high heels, and a white lab coat.
Quinn had another look that was started in 2016. She wore a sexier version of her original black and red jester outfit. Sometimes she appears in black gloves, opaque stockings, and boots.
Harley Quinn is sometimes seen with a baseball bat or an extremely large mallet.
Quinn has also been known to sport various tattoos. This is a part of the modern image that Harley is known for today. Harley’s look is emulated by many women today.
They like her sexy vixen style even though she’s missing a few screws. Harley Quinn’s persona has helped to make her one of the most recognized and popular DC universe characters of the modern era.
