Jack Harrison alongside his brother Drake are computer experts that work as part of Captain America’s network. They set up citizen patrols in Sandhaven, inArizona. During one patrol they were attacked, which resulted in Drake losing the use of his legs.
The Serpent Society were trying to take over Sandhaven, Jack and Drake told the local authorities about it. However the authorities decided not to act as they seemed to have all been paid off by the society.
Jack reinvents himself as Jack Flag, a hero to fight the Serpent Society. To get into shape Jack lifted weights, and taught himself martial arts. Jack was strong before he started training yet wanted to be stronger to take on the Serpent Society.
During the fight, Jack accidentally became covered in Hyde’s chemicals which gave him superhuman strength.
Power And Abilities
All the training and weight lifting makes Jack even stronger than before. Following contact with the Hyde chemicals, he became strong enough to lift around 10 tons as a result of accidentally gaining extra power.
Results of the Hyde-formula:
Jack was inadvertently sprayed by Calvin Zabo who was using the chemicals to become Mr. Hyde. This formula created by Zabo drastically enhances body weight and strength.
The Hyde formula improve strength, stamina, durability and healing abilities for Jack following exposure.
The Hyde spray of Calvin Zabo gave Jack Flag enough extra strength to be able to lift 10 tons. It means that he is a good recruit for either the Avengers or the Guardians of the Galaxy.
The spray had the consequence that Jack can exert himself for several hours before becoming exhausted or being harmed by toxins.
The Hyde spray means that Jack can survive and absorb more trauma and impact than the average person. Jack can survive severe blows yet he could be killed by bullets or sharp blades. He can sustain more damage but he is not immortal.
His altered metabolism enables Jack to recover from injury sooner than the average person. He recovers from most wounds within a couple of hours, or from broken limbs in one or two days.
The full extent of his ability to regenerate is not known. While on Knowhere, Jack required treatment for a spinal injury which he was unable to recover from using the healing abilities.
Major Appearances of Jack Flag
Jack And Captain America
Jack Flag actually got his super powers from Mr Hyde whilst fighting him. He had been attempting to undermine the Serpent Society from within after foiling a bank robbery. King Cobra had sent Jack to steal a picture from Mr Hyde.
The chemicals that split on him not only allowed him to defeat Mr Hyde it meant he assisted Captain America in defeating King Cobra and the rest of the Serpent Society.
Jack joins forces with Captain America in fighting ULTIMATUM, AIM and also Madcap. At one point the Captain believes he was dying and asks the rest of the group to carry on with his hotline.
Jack Flag is aware that he could be jailed under the terms of the Superhuman Registration Act for using his powers. Yet despite that, he helped a girl who was being attacked by gangsters.
When the Thunderbolts team hear of this violation, they are dispatched to arrest him.
During the fighting, one of the Thunderbolts team, Bullseye disables Jack by destroying his spine and paralysing him.
Convicted under the act, Jack is sent to Prison 42, to join other superhuman heroes and villains.
War Of Kings
Prison 42 is full of superhumans, heroes and powerful villans. Its governor and guards left due to the Skrull invasion of Earth. Jack is accepted as the leader of the prisoners despite still being in a wheelchair.
They successfully repel the attempts of the Blastaar to take control of Prison 42.
The Blastaar send Starlord (aka Peter Quill) to discuss the prisoners surrendering to them.
Skeleton Ki, one of the defenders betrays the rest by letting the Blastaar into the prison. Jack and Quill escape from the attackers and are saved by Quill’s team from the Guardians of the Galaxy.
The group make it back to Knowhere, the base of the Guardians. It is here where Jack has a spinal operation. Once he is fully recovered he decides to stay with the Guardians as he is considered an escaped convict on Earth.
The Thanos Imperative
Jack Flag witnesses the return of the Titan, Thanos which is how he got involved in The Thanos Imperative. He was there when Thanos was resurrected on the Sacrosanct, the home ship of the Universal Church of Truth.
The return of Thanos became a threat to the safety of the entire universe.
Jack at some point has left the Guardians of the Galaxy. The immediate threat of Thanos meant Earth has removed the Superhumans Registration Act allowing Jack Flag and other superheroes to return.
Captain America fears the increasing power of the Hydra so recruits Jack into S.H.I.E.L.D. Among the other recruits is Free Spirit.
Hydra used to create dopplegangers of the Avengers, including Captain America. It was the evil doppleganger of Captain America who was ultimately responsible for the death of Jack Flag.
Jack was just returning from a mission when the evil version of Captain America threw him out of a getaway plane.
S.H.I.E.L.D were able to find the critically injured Jack, yet their medical team was unable to get him out of a coma.
Prior to going on missions Jack Flag had given Free Spirit the power to decide what to do if he suffered life threatening injuries, or ended up in a coma.
Captain America returns later, and is determined to kill Jack by injecting him with a lethal dose of venom. The Captain is stopped by Free Spirit who informs him that she has decided to switch off Jack’s life support as there is no hope of recovery.
Flag dies as soon as the life support machine has been switched off. The evil Captain America left as soon as he is sure that Jack died.
